Vertical Leap: SEO services explained

Over the past decade, search engines have entirely transformed how people use the internet. SEO services are one of the new techniques of digital marketing that have sprung up to capitalise on this development – but unlike terms like ‘E-Commerce’, what these services are isn’t immediately obvious.

‘SEO’ stands for Search Engine Optimisation. In a nutshell, this refers to making sure that a website – be it an individual’s, a company’s or even a government organisation’s – gets the best possible ranking in search results. ‘SEO Services’ are what specialist companies offer to other businesses who want their websites to be easily located via Google, Bing, Yahoo or any other search engine.

How do they do this?

Although the results delivered by search engines are referred to as ‘organic’, this is a little misleading. Nothing about a search engine – nothing about the internet in fact – is anything like organic. In truth, search engines make use a complicated series of algorithms to ‘crawl’ websites for data, which are then recorded in an index. Results are presented to a user from this index based on the wording of their search query.

Where SEO enters the equation is in making sure that a site gets the strongest possible score in that index, for the keywords that the target audience is likely to use.

Why can’t you do this yourself?

Well, nothing stops you from trying. Of course the web is a crowded, competitive place and most keywords that users are likely to type have already been seized upon by existing websites. Without the right research and expertise, you’ll never get anywhere. Plus, it’s often said that search ranking is tidal – that it changes from day to day, from week to week, from month to month; it’s an ongoing task, in short. Not least because the search engines themselves are continuously changing their algorithms to ensure that the most relevant, the most popular web destinations score highest in their results; just keeping on top of SEO strategies can be a full time job!

For most companies, hiring SEO services is the only practical approach to maintaining any kind of visibility in search engine results. Very few people can afford the constant monitoring of content, rankings, link-building, web-traffic analysis, algorithm improvements and keyword optimisation strategies that effective SEO requires.

Considering that the vast majority of search engine users never click past the first ten results, the question isn’t so much whether you need to invest in SEO but how you could possibly hope to maintain an online presence without it.
