There is a fine line between proper search engine optimization, and what a search engine will consider to be spam. As we all know, not all search engine optimization methods are ethical. Search engines, such as Google, are making every effort to try to differentiate between ethical internet marketers and those who are simply taking the “easy” way out with spam.

The definition of spam, however, has been something of a debatable topic for many search engine optimization experts. The reason that everybody is working so hard to define it is because when it comes time to search engine optimize, there is a grey area between what is spam, and what is not. What is ethical marketing, and what is not. For a word that is so commonly utilized, spam is a very difficult thing to pinpoint and around which to place boundaries. An internet marketer would not want to inadvertently have their site penalized after all of the time and effort they have put toward making the site as search engine optimized as possible.

In theory, the difference is that a “non-spam” website that is truly meant for content, selling a product or service, and is optimized so that its content – which has value to the reader – is most attractive among search engines. On the other hand, a “spam” website is created for marketing purposes only. It has no real informational value and its content is worthless except for its attempts to achieve a search engine ranking.

Such spam sites can include those that have pages copied directly from other websites that are not of public domain. They might also include pages that are simply lists of keywords, instead of articles that happen to use the keywords among their information. Another kind of spam site is one that appears to either be blank or have text or images on it, but it also has hidden text in the background that has keywords repeated over and over, or simply in lists. This is done by making the text color and the background color the same color so that it is not visible to the reader.

However, some would argue that creating a site, such as one with keywords hidden in the background, is not unethical at all. The reason they argue for its validity is that it does not try to fool the search engine in any way, and it is unobtrusive to the viewer. Computers can see the text in plain sight, it is only the human eye that does not detect it.

However, by doing this, it reduces the chances of sites that are based on legitimate information and keywording techniques. These have been carefully created to include the right words, without taking away from the information and appearance of the site. It means that the sites for whom the keywords are truly relevant have a lower chance at achieving proper search engine ranking.

To prevent such efforts, search engines have employed such techniques as penalizing web sites and web pages that include information that has been copied directly from other sites. They also penalize pages and sites that have the same word repeated too many times in its content. There are other rules that are utilized as well, but they differ from search engine to search engine.

Penalization from a search engine can mean anything from assigning a very low rank, to blocking it from being indexed altogether. Naturally, when you are a legitimate site, you will want to avoid such punishment at all costs. Therefore, when you are performing your search engine optimization, it is important that you take care not to break the “spam” rules of the search engines. This includes one very important technique: when in doubt, err to the side of safety. It’s much better to achieve rank number two instead of number one, when you risk being kicked out altogether.

It is not difficult to search engine optimize legitimately. Simply create your own original copy, and write naturally, refraining from repeating your keywords so many times that things look a little bit “fishy”. The same thing goes for repeating the same website under a number of different domain names. Just keep yourself unique and natural, and all will work out in your favor with the search engines.

Every webmaster should have some basic understanding of these simple <a href="http://dmmbg.com/seo-techniques-to-make-your-website-visible.html"target="_blank"title="" >SEO techniques if they want to achieve Top Rankings for their site. The more you know about these Search Engine Optimization techniques; the better your web pages will fare in the different search engines, especially Google.

Optimizing your pages for the search engines should be your main priority because conquering and dominating your chosen keywords is often cited as one of the major determining factors in the success of your online site or business. You must have a rudimentary grasp of how SEO can work for you and your site.

These simple SEO Tips will help you understand the basics and help you reach your online goals.

1. Title Tag

The Title Tag is located at the top of your html page and it tells the search engines what your page is about. When you open your page in a browser these are the words at the very top of the screen. Despite its simplicity, the title tag is crucial to ‘on-page optimization’; it should include your main keywords and it should be 63 characters or less if you want your title to appear in full on Google.

Many SEO experts create web pages in a three-prong approach. They place the title in:

- the title tag – on the webpage itself – and in the URL for that page

Sometimes they will just pick the main keywords from the title and place them in the anchor url instead. For example: www. yourwebsite. com/keywords. html

3. Meta Description Tag

The Meta Tag contains the description for your web page. Your description will show up in all the search engines so you have to be careful to write precisely and objectively. It should be about 140 characters or around 20 words. Make sure to include your keywords but don’t spam – don’t repeat your keywords more than twice, using variations is helpful.

Keep in mind, successful webmasters make their descriptions stand out from the crowd and entice the surfer to click their link. It is also the first contact with your potential visitor or prospect so make a good first impression.

3. Anchor Tag or URL

The anchor tag is used to form links within websites or from site to site. This tag should have your title or the main keywords from your page title to be the most effective.

Anchor text is also important to know, these are the underlined, clickable text or words in a link. anchor text

If you want to check Google for all web pages containing your keywords in the anchor tags.

Just type into Google Search:

allinanchor:yourkeywords

4. Finding Backlinks

One of the keys to higher rankings is building quality links from relevant related quality sites. The search engines, especially Google, counts each link as a “vote” for your site or content. Many experts suggest you include your main keywords in the anchor text of these inbound links in order to rank high.

If you want to find the number of backlinks your site has.

Just type into Google Search:

link:yourURL

and it will give you the number of backlinks you have.

Google doesn’t give you all your existing backlinks, so you can try Yahoo! to find a more exact number.

Just open Yahoo! and type in: linkdomain:yourURL

5. Checking Indexed Pages

If is very important for you to know what content the search engines have indexed from your site. You can also check to see how your links are displayed and to see if any titles or descriptions are missing from your pages.

You can see how many of your pages are indexed in Google by using the site command.

Just type into Google Search:

site:yourURL

Another way to look at your pages in Google is to type in “http://yoursite” and “www. yoursite” with the quotation marks to see the exact number of listings for each.

6. Checking Google Cache

You can also check to see the Google Cache of your site by using the cache command. You will also discover when it was last retrieved.

Just type into Google Search:

cache:yourURL

7. Finding Associated Keywords

Keywords are the heart of the Internet, you must dominate the search engines for your chosen keywords if you are to succeed online. So make sure you have your main keywords in the Meta Keyword Tag on your page. Many experts suggest you place your page’s main keywords in the first and last 25 words on that page.

You must also be able to find and use variations of your keywords to completely conquer your targeted niche. To find what other keywords Google has associated with your main keywords, just use the tilde ~ command to find associated phrases in Google.

Just type into Google search:

~keywords

Variations will be highlighted in bold print.

8. Finding Titled Keywords

If you want to find competing sites that have your keywords in the title just use the allintitle command.

Just type into Google search:

allintitle:yourkeywords

In summary, if used consistently, these basic SEO techniques should help improve your rankings and keep you in the picture with regards to your standings in the search engines. Your site’s stats or raw traffic logs will also confirm the rise or fall of your keyword rankings. You must have complete knowledge of both your site and your keywords in the search engines, especially Google. Since Google will deliver most of your quality traffic, you must optimize for it and be aware of what is happening to your site and keywords within Google. This is yet another example where knowledge equals success.

Having a website is truly great for business, especially in these tech-savvy times, but merely having one and then doing nothing to promote it or optimize it for people to find and know about it makes all your efforts futile. Attracting potential clients to your site and eventually your business means that you need to optimize your content in order to appeal to the people you want to appeal to. This entails search engine optimization; that is, optimizing your site so that people can find your site through search engines. Keywords play a big part in this.

In SEO (search engine optimization), there are two techniques currently in use. These are <a href="http://dmmbg.com/black-hat-101.html"target="_blank"title="" >black hat and white hat techniques.

Black hat <a href="http://dmmbg.com/seo-techniques-to-make-your-website-visible.html"target="_blank"title="" >SEO techniques are frowned upon. These are methods that attempt to redirect search engine results into a particular target pages that are against the search engine’s terms of service. For the good of your site, these techniques are best avoided because they could eventually lead to your site being banned from search engines. It also does not offer anything to add to your site’s value. Some black hat techniques are:

Spamming – Spamming may occur in the form of comments in blogs that have links to make the reader click on them to drive traffic to the site, or in the form of blogs that companies make whose entries merely contain keywords (simply put, the content is not quality content), and it is these blogs that are the source of the comment spam one sees. The idea is to have people click on the links to drive traffic to the site, thus making them rank higher on search engine listings.

Cloaking – This is when the content presented to the search engine is different from what a visitor to the site may see. This method fools search engines into displaying that site when it would not be displayed otherwise.

Doorway and Gateway sites – These are sites set up that contain practically nothing except for some keywords that trick the search engine spider into indexing it higher up on search results. They usually have a redirection tool that leads to a “real” (although most times is just contains spam content) website. They have no use to the web surfer at all.

Keyword stuffing – This is when a site is filled with as many keywords and meta tags as possible in an attempt to fool the search engines into redirecting people into the site.

Meanwhile, white hat techniques are the good guys so to speak. When thinking about optimizing your site for the search engines, these are the techniques that you want to master and apply. These are more legit and more effective in driving traffic to your site.

Keywords are very important in SEO, but it is how these keywords are used that make the difference. Writing quality content that contains the necessary keywords is a great way to not only have the search engines find you, but it is one way of attracting traffic as well. Quality cannot be stressed enough.

Perhaps more important than content is the web site title and the content title. These are the first things that the spiders see when they crawl over your site. You want to have the necessary keywords there as well.

Have a go at social networking. These days, it is an important part of keeping a web site running. Your social network profile could serve as a supplement to your web site. This drives traffic to the site, also resulting in higher search rankings. And in the spirit of social networking, having some apps or some user-friendly tools that your visitors can download is another great way to attract future customers.

When it comes to SEO, the hat you wear does matter. Here’s to hoping that white hat is the one you choose, and your business couldn’t be happier.

In parts one and two of this five part tutorial, I discussed how to select and analyze the keywords that you should try and rank your page for. In this article I’ll discuss how to format your page in such a way that the search engines know it is relevant to your chosen keywords. This process is known as “on-page optimization”.
Step 3: On-Page Optimization
There are two kinds of search engine optimization: on-page and off-page. On-page optimization is the stuff you do to your actual web page that will help it get ranked. Off-page optimization means stuff that isn’t on the page that affects your ranking (namely, in-bound links). Both are important. For Yahoo and MSN, on-page is more important than it is for Google. Google relies more heavily on links than the other big two, though Yahoo and MSN also weight links heavily.
In this case, I wanted to optimize the home page of the feline photos blog for the phrase “cat pictures”. This is how I normally do this:
1. Make sure the domain name contains the keywords.
2. Make the title of the page my exact keywords I am targeting, capitalized appropriately.
3. Make the very first text on the page the keywords in an H1 (header) tag.
4. Put an introductory paragraph that uses the keywords right after the H1 tag.
5. If I have a lot of text on the page, break it up with H2 tags that contain variations of my keywords.
Unfortunately, catpictures. blogspot. com was not available, so I couldn’t do #1. Since competition for “cat pictures” was somewhat light, I knew that I could get by without worrying about it. But if you are targeting more competitive keywords, make sure that your domain name (or subdomain name) contains the exact phrase you want to rank for. This especially helps for MSN.
Also, I didn’t do number five for my feline photos blog, because being a picture gallery there wasn’t that much text on the page. But I’ll give you more detail on how that works in case your page does have a lot of text.
Let’s say that I have an article on pontoon boats that I want to rank for the phrase “pontoon boats”. This is what I would do for the on-page optimization: Try and get a domain name with the words “pontoon boats” in it (www. pontoonboats. com would be perfect). If there isn’t anything available, then setup a subdomain for it (pontoonboats. mydomain. com).
Make the page title “Pontoon Boats”, put the H1 tag at the beginning of the text as “Pontoon Boats”, then break up the article with H2 subheadings like “Maintaining Pontoon Boats”, “Pontoon Boats for Fishing”, “Are Pontoon Boats Fast?”, etc. You don’t want your subheadings to be exactly your keywords like the main H1 heading and the title, but you want the subheadings to contain your keywords.
That’s really all I do with on-page optimization, and as I said before, if the competition is light I don’t always do all five of those things.
There are other things that search engine marketers focus on and spend a lot of time with (things like keyword density and image alt tag density, etc. ), but since I don’t try to rank for fiercely competitive keywords I don’t usually bother with all of that. I leave the ranking of really tough keywords to the serious SEO gurus, because to me it’s just too much dang work.
To me, ranking for really competitive keywords is like owning a boat: it requires far too much time, money and effort to maintain to be worth the end result (going to the lake three times a year-sorry boat owners!).
No thanks. I’ll rank for moderately competitive keywords and only have to do a little bit of maintenance every now and again, and by multiplying that effort I’ll earn 10 times the advertising revenue that I would if I focused on one tough set of keywords.
What’s Next?
Once you’ve got your page properly optimized for your chosen keywords, it’s time to get to the “hard” part: getting in-bound links to your site. I quote “hard” because it’s not really difficult, just tedious. However, in the last part of this tutorial I will show you a tool that makes all of the work of gathering in-bound links much, much easier.
