There are at least four important considerations you need to make, when designing vinyl advertising banners. We will explore each of those in turn (together with its implications, and the right choices for you to make with respect to each consideration). We need to mention though, that these are considerations you should make ideally when the banner project is still on paper (that is, at the conception stage). In other words, these are not considerations you can make ‘as you go along.’ These are the considerations which would determine, among other things, the type, size and color of banner material you should buy.

Although there are some colors universally known to be attention-grabbing, the ideal choice in your case will depend on several factors. It will depend, for one, on the background against which your banner will be appearing. It will also depend on the color, size and description of fonts you will be using in crafting your banner message. For these reasons, it is apparent that you will have to do a lot of ‘forward-thinking’ and visualization, when making a decision on the color of banner material you should use.
- The banner layout consideration: this is where you work out how the various elements (text lines and graphics) will appear on the vinyl advertising banner. One key question you need to ask yourself here is as to what specific message you want to pass along through your banner. The main message of the banner will need to be given prominence, even as the other (supporting) elements get reasonable exposure as well. The question as to whether you will be applying cut-out self-sticking lettering to the banner, or directly printing the banner will also have a bearing on the banner layout you ultimate go with. In all cases, it should be a neat layout, which gives prominence to the main message you want to pass along, and which piques and maintains the targeted audience’s attention.
- The banner font size consideration: the ideal font size for your banner will depend on several factors. It will depend, for one, on the length of message you want to pass along. The longer the message, the smaller the fonts you will have to use. Your font size choice will also be influenced by the background against which you will be displaying your banners. The brighter the background with which your banner will be competing for attention, the bigger (and brighter) your fonts have to be, if the banner is to get viewers’ attention.
- The banner graphics consideration: whether or not to use graphics in your vinyl advertising banners will depend on the type of message you want to pass along. But in all cases, you need to remember that a picture is always worth a thousand words. The complexity of graphics you can use (in case you opt to use graphics) is largely dependent on whether you have the opportunity to print the banners – in which case you can use complex graphics. But if the only way you can get your message onto the banner materials is through the use of self-sticking lettering and graphics, you will only be able to use simpler graphics. In all cases, if you have to use graphics in your vinyl advertising banners, you should ensure that you position them in such a way that they command the banner viewers’ attention instantly.
