If you spend a few years doing Internet Marketing – you will see the fashions come and go – and this month’s fashion is definitely to try to persuade beginner bloggers or businesses trying to get online – that they need to pay out to get their sites optimized for Google. Well its crazy – particularly if you are already using WordPress as a website platform – free on page SEO is easy to do – this is how!
If you are running WordPress its absolutely critical that you change a few settings – but you only have to do these once. Go to permalinks and make sure they are set up to display your post’s title not some meaningless number. Also make sure that your blog’s title and tagline include your main keywords.
First you need to know the keywords you are targeting – no tool can tell you this – you need to understand and do keyword research. So you have you keyword – say “free on page SEO”. Write your post – write it naturally – but after you’ve written make sure you’ve included the phrase in the title of your post, in the first paragraph and in the last.
Now if you are using WordPress make sure you install a free plugin called “all-in-one SEO” or “Platinum SEO” – once you have done that below your editing screen you will have the option to write a new title and meta description for your post. This gives you the option to rewrite the title to make sure the keywords are near the front. Then write a custom meta description which is both attractive to readers and makes them want to click through (as this is what Google will often use to display in the search results) and make sure you include your targeted phrase near the start of the description.
Include your keyword phrase and some closely related terms in your tags.
That’s it you’re done! It really isn’t that hard is it! The trouble is that many people have a vested interest in making things like “on page SEO” look very technical and sophisticated. The reality is that the on page stuff is the easiest to get right – and that most of it you will practically do automatically while you write once you are aware of the rules. Writing for SEO is very little different from writing for readers – in fact there are far fewer “rules” in this SEO tutorial than there is in English Grammar!
